• Ambela (Umbeyla) Campaign, October–December 1863 — a major North-West Frontier expedition associated with British operations against the Hindustani Wahhabi/Mujahidin groups based around Sitana and Malka; Sir Neville Chamberlain commanded the initial force.
• Continued Wahhabi activity connected with the movement of Sayyid Ahmad Barelvi remained a concern for the colonial state and was followed by major Wahhabi trials in the 1860s and 1870s.
• The pre-Congress phase — with the 1857 Revolt suppressed, organised all-India political nationalism had not yet emerged; the Indian National Congress was founded in 1885.

• Religious Endowments Act, 1863 (Act XX of 1863) — enabled the government to divest itself of the management of certain religious endowments connected with temples, mosques and other religious institutions, transferring responsibilities to trustees, managers or committees; it reflected the post-1857
• Satyendranath Tagore was selected for the Indian Civil Service in 1863 — the first Indian to enter the ICS, a landmark later linked with nationalist demands for Indianisation of the higher services and simultaneous civil-service examinations in India and Britain.
• Death of Viceroy Lord Elgin (James Bruce, 8th Earl of Elgin) at Dharamshala on 20 November 1863 — Sir William Denison acted as Governor-General until Sir John Lawrence took office in January 1864.
• Machinery of Crown rule in operation — the Government of India Act 1858, Indian Councils Act 1861 and the High Courts of Calcutta, Bombay and Madras, established in 1862 under the Indian High Courts Act 1861, underpinned direct British administration.

• American Civil War cotton boom (1861–65) — the disruption of supplies of American cotton to Lancashire increased demand for Indian raw cotton, especially through Bombay and cotton-growing regions of western and central India.
• Bombay share mania — cotton profits encouraged speculation in banks, joint-stock companies and land-reclamation schemes such as Back Bay Reclamation; the boom collapsed after the end of the American Civil War in 1865.
• Guaranteed railway expansion — the trunk network expanded under the guarantee system, linking cotton-growing interiors to export ports and contributing to the commercialisation of agriculture.

• Birth of Narendranath Datta — Swami Vivekananda — in Calcutta on 12 January 1863; he later became a disciple of Ramakrishna, addressed the 1893 Parliament of Religions in Chicago and founded the Ramakrishna Mission in 1897. His birthday is observed as National Youth Day.
• Foundation of the Mohammedan Literary Society in Calcutta by Nawab Abdul Latif — an important body promoting modern education and intellectual discussion among Indian Muslims.
• Birth of Sayajirao Gaekwad III (Gopalrao Gaekwad) on 11 March 1863 — the future Maharaja of Baroda known for reforms in education and social policy.
• 12 जनवरी 1863 को कलकत्ता में नरेंद्रनाथ दत्त — स्वामी विवेकानंद — का जन्म; बाद में वे रामकृष्ण के शिष्य बने, 1893 में शिकागो में विश्व धर्म संसद को संबोधित किया और 1897 में रामकृष्ण मिशन की स्थापना की। उनका जन्मदिन राष्ट्रीय युवा दिवस के रूप में मनाया जाता है।
