• Princely-state integration advanced under Sardar Patel and V.P. Menon — Travancore–Cochin Union formed on 1 July 1949, Bhopal merged with India on 1 June 1949, and Manipur and Tripura came under Indian administration on 15 October 1949.
• Abolition of Privy Council Jurisdiction Act, 1949 — ended appeals to the British Privy Council, leaving the Federal Court as the highest court until the Supreme Court was set up in 1950.

• Rupee devalued in September 1949 following the devaluation of sterling against the US dollar, as India was then linked to the sterling area.

• India recognised the People's Republic of China on 30 December 1949 — among the first non-communist countries to do so.
• Nehru made an official visit to the United States in October 1949 — an early step in shaping post-independence diplomacy.

• Press Trust of India began operations in 1949, taking over the Associated Press of India — creating an independent national news agency.
• Landmark year for Hindi cinema with Andaz, Barsaat and Mahal — Mahal's 'Aayega Aanewala' helped establish Lata Mangeshkar as a leading playback singer.
• On the night of 22–23 December 1949 idols were placed inside the Babri Masjid at Ayodhya, after which the site became the subject of legal and administrative action with long-running consequences.
