1999 was dominated by the Kargil War (May–July), when Operation Vijay evicted Pakistani intruders months after Vajpayee's Lahore peace initiative. At home his government fell by one vote, the BJP-led NDA won the 13th Lok Sabha election, and the year closed with the IC-814 hijacking to Kandahar.
